Traveling in the 21st century can be unpredictable and sometimes uncomfortable. Whether it’s bad weather or human error, routine trips can become a hassle. For instance, flying means sitting in a long metal tube for hours, and we all have our own stories of turbulence, noisy children, and unruly passengers.

One man recorded a passenger on an airplane who got very upset because of a crying baby. While many of us can sympathize with feeling annoyed, most people wouldn’t take their frustration out on the airline crew and other travelers. This angry passenger’s outburst was so over-the-top that the video went viral.

“Air rage,” or when people get angry on an airplane, is quite common. Researchers have even started studying it to figure out why air travel can make us so grumpy. One study asked hundreds of passengers what bothered them the most, and most said it was being stuck in a small space with other people. We’ll talk about other reasons in a bit. Still, confinement and being around others can lead to conflicts, sometimes even physical altercations, passengers being removed from flights by security, or chaotic scenes at the airport. The story you saw on TikTok is just one example, with many similar videos.

#1 Everyone dislikes flight delays and crying babies, but an adult should be able to maintain composure.

Air Travel Stressors

Air travel isn’t just about being on the plane. Airports, often located outside the city, have challenges, including check-ins, security checks, long lines, and early morning flights. And all those people you encounter at the airport? They’re in the same boat as you. The constant noise, hunger, tiredness, and even strange smells can add up and irritate passengers. Being an adult means not making these irritations someone else’s problem, but it’s important to remember that babies don’t understand this.

Even the process of getting on the plane can be frustrating. First, you have to wait in line, sometimes after waiting in another line at the airport. If you’re not flying first class, you have to walk past those who are already seated, and that can sometimes lead to feelings of envy. Researchers say this envy can turn into inner “air rage,” which can explode outward if something else triggers it, like a flight delay. But let’s be clear: none of this justifies screaming at the airline crew or other passengers.

Sadly, these incidents are becoming more common. In the US, about a third of disruptions caused by passengers on planes result in flight diversions. Even though this doesn’t happen on every flight, no one wants their vacation disrupted because a grown-up acted like a child. Ideally, people would learn to handle their frustrations better, but that may happen later. In the TikTok video, a grown man was yelling about putting handcuffs on a child, which is far from rational.

In conclusion, air travel can be stressful, and passengers can get upset for various reasons. While feeling frustrated is okay, it’s not okay to take it out on others. We should all strive to be more patient and understanding, especially when traveling with babies and young children. So, next time you fly, remember to take a deep breath and stay calm, even if things don’t go as planned.
